Me with a kitten whom I have dubbed Mistoffelees after Mr. Mistoffelees in Cats. Mistoffelees and his littermates are rescues and are being kept at the Ely Veterinary Clinic (Ely does not have an animal shelter other than the clinic). The kittens were terrified of humans at first but are coming around nicely now.
Another rainy night. Blake and Jen’s friend, Karl, is here for the weekend. Temperatures are cooler again and we are back to running dogs. We’ve taken several teams out over the past couple of days. This morning it was 29 degrees and there was a pretty nice frost. The days are becoming shorter, which we’ve really noticed in the mornings - it takes longer for the sun to come up!
Wednesday night, I was heading from the cabin to the bunkhouse when I realized that the sky was bright along the horizon. This didn’t strike me as odd at first because I am used to seeing lights of nearby cities and towns. But then I remembered that we weren’t near any cities or towns and the sky should be dark. I called Blake out from the cabin to make sure I wasn’t looking at the last of the sunset. I wasn’t - my suspicions were correct, it was indeed the Northern Lights. They didn’t look quite like I’ve seen in Alaska but were still pretty bright. It seemed as if there was a mass of green and red light radiating from the North.
You can tell that Fall is coming. The leaves are just starting to change and I am beginning to see a burnt look that I associate with Thanksgiving in the Southeast. It’s not quite there yet but it’s obviously coming. Fall is on its way. Much earlier than I am used to. Nice.

Hi Alice, That’s awesome that you are able to see the Northern Lights! Tropical Storm Hanna is about to visit us in Eastern NC tonight. Just got an e-mail about a 400+ puppy mill that was raided in Denver,NC for animal neglect. 40 Siberians are among the various breeds in this operation ran by a family of three people. Massive volunteer rescue is taking place to help these animals. The neighbors complained of the odor and the noise to the county law enforcement office. Looking forward to the cooler weather! Take care, Dave

I hear that some areas of NC got rain but others did not. I had not heard about the puppy mill bust. Are you going to be involved or foster any of the dogs? I hope they are not in too bad shape. That’s always sad when something like that comes to light.
Alice

Hanna gave us several inches of rain and one down dead tree in the backyard, thank you Hanna for taking that tree down! I rescued from the shelter an Alaskan Malamute young male 2 month ago who is keeping me busy. Vetted him, had 3 types on intestional worms, heartworm positive, and not neutered. Unfortunately I am not getting involved with the abuse case. Checkout Pet-Abuse.com, Denver,NC Case ID 14438 for details. Only 160 dogs 40 cats, 100 rodents, and other critters involved. An animal rescue person who ran amuck! You have to know your limits otherwise big problems develop in a hurry! Dave
